The Actress Says Speaking About Donald Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Dividing the Country Apart
The star has revealed that she believes it's no longer suitable to voice opinions regarding the Trump government, concerned it could exacerbate divisive discussions and further divisions across the nation.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Says the Actress
Speaking with media, the Oscar winner shared, “When Trump was first in office, I believed I was acting frantically like a chicken with my head cut off. But as we’ve learned, over multiple voting cycles, Hollywood stars fail to influence in any way on electoral choices.”
Lawrence added, “Why continue? I’m just voicing my thoughts on something that’s going to worsen tensions dividing the nation apart.”
Changing Allegiances
Lawrence has previously been open about backing Republican and Democratic candidates throughout her life. Growing up with conservative Republicans in her home state, she voted for John McCain in the 2008 election before joining the left-leaning politics and revealing she realized during the Obama era that supporting the GOP was undermining her individual liberties as a woman.
Past Statements
In 2015, she commented that a Trump victory could represent “a catastrophic event” and endorsed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 election. In the latest campaign, she voiced her backing to Kamala Harris, “since I feel she’s an excellent choice and I trust that she will make every effort to safeguard women’s health rights.”
Industry Position
Jennifer Lawrence was aligned with many in the entertainment industry in her opposition to Trump as a candidate for re-election, but the limited influence celebrities have over the voting intentions was highlighted by his election win.
“The second term appears changed,” commented she of Trump’s presidency. “Because he said what he was going to do. We understood his record for the previous administration. He was very clear. And voters made that decision.”
New Release
Lawrence is currently promoting Die, My Love, Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she stars as a recent parent who struggles with her psychological well-being in the countryside. During a interview session for the film in the film festival, the star spoke about Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “It’s frightening. It’s devastating. What’s occurring is no less than a humanitarian crisis and it’s awful.”
Additional Thoughts
The actress elaborated by expressing that she was disappointed by “the disrespect in the conversations of American politics right now and how that is going to be normalised to the kids today. It’s going to be typical to them that politicians lie.”
The actor attempted to refocus outrage about the issue to leaders rather than entertainers. “Keep attention on those accountable,” she advised, in what many took to be a nod to the recent commitment supported by more than 4,000 entertainment industry figures to avoid Israeli film institutions.
Relatable Experiences
Lawrence, who won an Oscar at a young age for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook, is generating Oscar buzz for her work in her latest project. Although Lynne Ramsay has rejected the story being interpreted as one of postpartum depression and psychological distress, Lawrence shared that she identified with elements of her character’s journey after the delivery of her youngest child, shortly after shooting ended.
“It was fear about my child,” she explained, “envisioning every potential danger, and then doubting everything that I was trying. I was receiving counseling, but I started taking a treatment called the prescription and I took it for two weeks and it made a difference.”
Career Moments
Lawrence also mentioned regarding the liberating necessity of filming without clothes in the film while she was in pregnancy and unable to exercise.
“It feels nice,” she commented, about having to cast off vanity. “Honestly, I sometimes think where I’m like, What technically are the differences between myself and a sex worker? But it doesn’t keep me up at night.”
