Peak Pizza? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Steps Down After Pivot Into Chicken.

A boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who suggested the United Kingdom might have reached peak pizza while diversifying the chain into poultry items has been replaced after tensions with its board.

Executive Transition

Rennie is departing after only 24 months in the top role, and will be replaced on an interim basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a new leader.

Rennie, who served at the company for over 20 years, had aimed to shift Britain's biggest pizza takeaway chain towards fried chicken, remarking earlier this month there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He noted poultry was the most rapidly expanding menu item in the world.

Board Friction

It is understood that there was tension between the CEO and the governance team over his strategy and business vision, although Domino's official statement said he was departing “through mutual consent”.

New Product Introduction

In September, the chain launched its chicken-focused product line – which the former chief described as a “bold new chapter” for the group – and is trialling it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and the province.

While the firm is still intending to launch it across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it regards fried chicken as an addition to its primary pizza operations.

Leadership Comment

The Domino's chair, the Domino's chair, commented: “Directors think that there are a number of opportunities to enhance value and performance improvement in Domino's core business. We are concentrating on finding the suitable leader to lead the careful implementation of that development approach.”

Market Difficulties

In the latest update, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the British Isles, said sales fell by 1.5% in the latest quarter. In August, it alerted that the quick-service industry had “grown more challenging” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the run-up to the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.

Rival chains are also facing challenges. Another major chain revealed the shutting of dozens of outlets a last month, after the business behind its outlets fell into administration.

Health Efforts

Adapting to consumer trends towards better nutrition, the company has rolled out lower-calorie items, such as its light base line of bakes below 400 kcal as well as meat-free and allergy-friendly pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has over 2,300 kcal. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171, while a small has 909 calories.

Acting Management

Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and previously worked for the gaming group William Hill. It is thought that she prefers not to take on the CEO position on a full-time basis.

Frampton stated: “The company has a number of ongoing growth and operational projects that we will be dedicated to implementing at speed.”

Frampton noted these comprised additional efforts on the organization's supply chain and new item creation, and its rewards program.

The pizza chain is also in need of a long-term finance director until the spring, when a new appointee joins from the drinks company C&C Group. Until then, Richard Snow acts as temporary CFO.
