Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
