Pacific Bluefin Tuna Sells for Record Bid of $3.2 million at Tokyo New Year Sale
A massive bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the new year.
The winning offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the company of a nationwide sushi chain, which operates restaurants domestically and abroad.
"The first tuna brings a prosperous start," commented the business owner, a familiar bidder at the yearly first sale.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is noted for making record bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Past
After the auction, the winner told journalists that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," adding, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price escalated in no time."
This most recent acquisition surpasses his own record purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Even after once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to shatter his personal record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously known for exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which stated the fish would be served at its restaurants throughout the country.
The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter processed for diners at the bidder's sushi establishments immediately after the auction ended.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a good way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year begins," shared one elated customer.
