Lando Norris Moves Closer to Title as Max Verstappen Claims Vegas Grand Prix Win
The McLaren driver currently holds a thirty point lead over teammate Oscar Piastri with only fifty-eight points remaining in the remaining events
McLaren's Lando Norris moved closer to a maiden world title with runner-up position in the Vegas race behind the Red Bull of Max Verstappen
Norris now leads fellow McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, who finished in fourth place behind the Mercedes of George Russell, by 30 points heading to the second-to-last race in Qatar this coming weekend
The Briton will win the title in the desert as long as he doesn't surrender more than five points to Piastri in Losail, or 17 to Verstappen
The Australian driver, so strong in the opening stages of the championship, has failed to finish on the podium for six consecutive events
"Verstappen had a good race. I made the mistake early on and was too punchy on that opening corner," stated Norris
"It remains a positive outcome to get second place. I've got to praise Verstappen and Red Bull"
After Qatar, the last event of the season follows in Abu Dhabi on December 7th
The main developments of one of Formula 1's most high-profile races were:
Norris maintained his progress towards the championship despite the win to Verstappen
Oscar Piastri's challenging performance streak persisted as his title hopes wane
A excellent win for Max Verstappen to maintain him in the championship battle
Recoveries for both Ferrari drivers, following a difficult qualifying, with Lewis Hamilton securing a single point for tenth place following beginning at the rear
Max Verstappen Stays in Title Contention
Max Verstappen overtakes Norris at the start following the British driver went off line at the opening turn
At the start, Lando Norris was faithful to his statement that he was "not present to avoid risks" as he battled aggressively to protect his lead from starting first from Max Verstappen
But following an forceful cut in front of the Red Bull driver to block the Dutchman's attack on the inside, Norris misjudged his braking zone and went too deep into the turn
This allowed Verstappen to drive past into the lead while the British driver also the runner-up spot to George Russell
Through two VSC periods for some early incidents, featuring at the start when Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson collided with Oscar Piastri, Verstappen gradually stamped his authority on the race
Russell made an early pit stop for the hard tyres, but Norris and Verstappen stayed out
The McLaren driver stopped five circuits after the Mercedes driver and Max Verstappen 10
Verstappen was could return still in the first place, George Russell having been unable to catch up on the Red Bull car despite his newer rubber
Norris returned after George Russell from his stop but following a several careful circuits to let his tires to warm up, quickly reduced his three-point-three second deficit to the Mercedes driver and overtook into second place on the thirty-fourth lap
The British driver asked his engineer how to run the rest of his event, effectively questioning whether he should settle for second or challenge for the lead
He was told to "go and get Verstappen" but it soon became clear he had little opportunity. Verstappen was readily able to defend against Norris' attacks, and in the closing stages the margin increased significantly as the McLaren began to suffer a technical issue which has thus far not been defined
Even with dropping nearly three seconds a lap, Lando Norris was able to defend against George Russell because of the size of the advantage he had established while chasing Max Verstappen
The Verstappen's sixth victory of the season - only one less than both McLaren drivers - was achieved in emphatic style and maintains him in championship contention, at least theoretically, even if he needs issues for Norris in the final two events to overtake him
"It's still a significant margin, we consistently attempt to optimize everything we've got," Verstappen stated
"In upcoming weekends we will attempt to take victory in the race and by the conclusion of Abu Dhabi we will know where we end up, but I'm extremely pleased of the entire team"
Disappointing Race' for Piastri
Piastri began fifth but dropped two positions on the opening lap after being hit by Lawson, who was soon eliminated of the battle by a damaged front wing
He followed Lawson's team-mate Isack Hadjar for the opening fifteen circuits before passing him on the Las Vegas Strip but lost out to Charles Leclerc, who he was able to overtake again during the pit-stop period
The Australian ended up behind the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli, who ran nearly the entire race on the durable compound after pitting during the initial VSC, but was awarded a five second time penalty for a start-line violation, which was not clearly visible on replays
"It proved to be a frustrating event from pretty much beginning to end in certain respects," Piastri informed BBC Radio 5 Live
Questioned about how he would approach the remaining events, he commented: "Simply attempt to put myself in the optimal situation I can. I clearly require quite a lot of things to favor me at this stage to win, but all I can do is make myself in the best position to take advantage if something happens"
Charles Leclerc hung on in sixth place, insufficiently close to benefit from Kimi Antonelli's penalty, while Carlos Sainz fell to seventh at the finish, his Williams missing the pace to challenge with the leading outfits in the dry conditions, following his heroic performance to qualify third in the wet
Isack Hadjar secured eighth place ahead of Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg and Hamilton
The seven-time champion executed a flying start, rising to 13th on the first lap and proceeded to move forwards
He became trapped in a slipstream group with a group of other cars but was able to employ his strong beginning to rescue a championship point following the poorest qualifying session of his career
