Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
