Blast Takes 3 Law Enforcement Officers During Eviction Operation in Northern Italy
Three police officers lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house near the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three officers killed served in the Carabinieri force.
Arrests and Aftermath
Two individuals got detained at the scene and another man who fled subsequent to the incident was found shortly later. The trio have been admitted to hospital.
The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area displayed the building left as a heap of debris.
“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The head of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member caused the blast.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno informed reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the interior minister said.
Injuries and Destruction
Those injured by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of national police and a emergency responder.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
The prosecutor believed the explosion had taken place on a level above the access point and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, noting that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Defence Minister the Defence Minister united with other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the performance of their duties.
